Many libraries have a schools service; a school can borrow a box of books of particular topics or reading levels, for an extended loan period. Some libraries will extend this service to home educating families, especially if topics do not coincide with the national curriculum demands of local schools.

They have a section on publications which is very school orientated, 3 ’learning journey’ publications which cover subjects children would be taught at school for different age ranges and some activity suggestions which can be down loaded – Roman one in history includes details of sites, mosaic suggestions and cooking suggestions. Cover both primary and secondary education.

FREE PACKS OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL

British Glass
Packs can be ordered through their website. The education pack is a free CD ROM, which educates children in the importance of recycling and shows how to do it. Although the website asks for the school address, it is acceptable to state you are a home educator.

The British Museum
There is a charge for Education Packs, but they also have nine different sets of worksheets available just for the cost of postage. These are for all of the different key stage groups and can be obtained by writing to the British Museum at:

Share the World
This is an educational programme designed for children to understand and appreciate the animal kingdom. The educational pack (video and poster) can be ordered on line. Also on line there are a number of worksheets and ideas you can print off, as well as activities and ideas for three main teaching subjects (English, science and PSHE).

Dubble
Dubble is a fair trade chocolate company and it comes from the people behind comic relief. The educational pack may be ordered on line, but is currently being updated (so check availability). However you can still find many worksheets and teaching ideas on their website.

Join the Activators
An educational programme designed to promote healthy eating and the importance of physical exercise for primary school aged children. Free CD ROM with animated scenarios and a teachers booklet can be ordered on line.

Waste Watch
Environmental charity that promotes waste management. There are two free packs available, both with ideas and activity cards. However you have to send enough stamps to cover the postage and a large envelope for each pack. The envelope has to be larger than A4 size, one pack’s postage cost is 8 first class stamps, the other’s is 5 first class stamps.

http://www.primaryresources.co.uk – Set up by a head teacher, this site has hundreds of worksheets, ideas and lesson plans, each one having been sent in by a teacher.

http://www.funschool.com – Many worksheets, printables and online games, this is a site mostly for little children, however there are activities for children aged 8 and up.

http://home.freeuk.net/elloughton13/ – The website of Snaith primary school, a very simple site, designed for children to be able to use. Has many different lesson plans and worksheets generalising in history,
geography or social studies.

http://www.schoolexpress.com – This has over 6000 free worksheets that can be printed off, as well as on line activities.

http://www.enchantedlearning.com – This focuses on animals and their habitats, simple maths, geography, and oceans. Many printables but also a lot of online activities.

http://www.coolmath4kids.com – A jam packed website full of math activities, downloadable lessons and online games. For all ages.

http://www.educational-world.com – Lesson plans, worksheets and online activities for all ages.

http://www.jamesbancrofteducation.net – A site aimed at primary school teachers and trainee teachers, this has a great abundance of free worksheets and online ideas and lesson plans.

http://www.teachingideas.co.uk – Aimed at primary school children, this has many free worksheets and lesson plans.

http://www.timetoteach.co.uk – Website dedicated to maths, from key stage 1 up to key stage 9.

http://www.channel4.com/learning – Has a wide range of worksheets covering the subject of geography, has downloadable worksheets and lesson plans.

http://www.lessonplanspages.com – An educational resource centre that provides many free downloadable worksheets covering several different subjects.

http://www.howstuffworks.com – Very good website, very informative, covers a wide range of how things work from cholesterol to tattoos, no worksheets but all the information can be printed off and there is an option to sign up for a free monthly newsletter.

http://www.english-teaching.co.uk/samples/htm –Designed for older children this website has many worksheets, some you have to be a member in order to obtain (membership is £15 a year) but there are many English worksheets you can download for free.

http://www.teachers.net/lessons/ – Many lessons on all kind of subjects with new ones being added all the time. All ideas and lesson plans are submitted by teachers. Quite similar to the Primary Resources website though this has worksheets and lesson plans for older children.

http://www.discovery.com – From the popular television channel. This site has many free worksheets and lessons plans for all ages; subjects range from animals to weather.

http://www.topmarks.co.uk – Lots of ideas, worksheets and links to other educational sites, covers all subjects for all ages.

http://www.happychild.org.uk – Fantastic site with literally hundreds of free worksheets, ideas and lesson plans. It covers 14 different subjects and areas.
